Do Jobs for Stay at Home Moms Exist?
This question burned into my soul as I sat holding my newborn, while facing the reality that I had to return to work in a few days. I knew I didn’t want to go back to work. The thought of pumping at work and handing my new baby to a stranger to care for and raise put daggers through my heart.
There are so many obstacles to face when you reach this point of motherhood. For most, going back to work requires paying for daycare. Daycare is SUPER expensive, which means at the end of the day your paycheck isn’t actually providing that much income. For you, it isn’t worth sacrificing raising your baby for a few dollars a month. With this in mind, most mamas end up staying home.

There are plenty of ways you can live with less money. There articles that will teach you how live off of one income. I did it for a while, and it’s really hard! It adds stress to the family. My husband carried the financial weight of our family, which put so much pressure on him. And it was stressful on me trying to budget strictly, making every penny count. We made it work but I wanted to be able to buy my kids cute clothes, eat healthy food or buy myself a new shirt.
Financially, we were scraping by but we were both stressed. Personally, I was struggling too. Being a stay at home mom is SO great, but it’s hard when you’re a productive person or like working. As a mom, you shouldn’t have to choose between raising your kids or following your own path. You’re a mom but you’re still your own person too! You’re allowed to carve out time in your day to do what you want to do.

Become a Virtual Assistant
As more people are working from home and online, more people are looking for VAs (virtual assistants). VA jobs for stay at home moms work well because you can charge your own rates, establish your own hours and work on your own time.
Think of a VA just like an assistant but virtually. Instead of getting coffee or making copies, you’re doing everything via computer. As a VA, you can answer emails, manage appointments, create invoices, write articles, etc.
The downside of becoming a VA is it can be tough to market yourself and land a steady-paying job. You can offer services on sites like Fiverr. The Pay at Home Parent has this great article that walks you through 7 steps to becoming a VA.
Teach English Online
If you’re a native English speaker, have a bachelor’s, and have an interest in teaching, this could be the job for you! There are several online teaching opportunities to teach English as a second language. You’d virtually teach school-aged children in China, and it usually pays pretty well.
Some companies that offer this as a way to work as a stay at home mom includes VipKid, GoGoKid and Magic Ears. You can even apply to more than one company to increase pay and work hours. The downfall of these jobs is you have to be booked; applying doesn’t mean you’ll get to teach and get paid right away. Some of the companies also require you to work on Beijing time, which is the opposite of US time. Otherwise, it’s a great way to choose your own hours and get paid as a SAHM.

Blogging has it’s advantages, but it also has it’s downfalls. While there are lots of people who make really good money blogging, it takes a lot of time, research and hard work. I’m super passionate about helping SAHMs and talking about natural birth, but as I write this, I’m only making about $200 a month after blogging for two years. I’m proud of that $200 but it isn’t replacing my paycheck, which is why I started in direct sales.
Direct Sales
Selling goods directly to consumers has gotten a bad rep over the last few years. However, it’s climbed the charts in best companies to work for and start your own business. I, myself, was a massive skeptic. Pyramid scheme is all I heard when direct selling came to my mind. But while I worked tenaciously on my blog, waiting for it to be successful, I needed another income if I wanted to stay home with my kids.
Direct (social) selling is one of the best ways to make money as a stay at home mom. There is next to no financial investment and you work on your own time. Plus, you can make thousands of dollars a month, earn a free car, free trips and live the life you want to live. It’s not for everyone.
